UNIQUE QUALITY FIGURAL ANTIQUE SILVER / CRYSTAL FRENCH DAGGER VINIAGARETE 1800's
UNIQUE QUALITY FIGURAL ANTIQUE SILVER /
CRYSTAL FRENCH DAGGER VINIAGARETE 1800's
FINE & UNIQUE SMALL QUALITY FIGURAL ANTIQUE SILVER / BLUE CRYSTAL
DAGGER VINIAGARETE GOLD GILDED INSIDE ~ FRENCH CIRCA LATE 1800s
This is a small Antique French silver, hand embellished, gold gilded inside figural Vinaigrette in a very unusual shape of a dagger, is of excellent quality, and is in minty condition. The “blade” portion of this figural dagger vinaigrette is slightly under 4” long and is made from dark blue cut crystal with a single hollow center tube that tapers towards the point but appears as a double tube in some of the reflection images. The inside compartment has no access to the inside tube of the blue crystal blade, so the 4-sided blade is decorative only. The 4 sides of the “blade” tapers from the cross guard towards the 4-sided angled point that has one tiny hard to see chip to one of the 4 sides at the tip that doesn’t alter the shape of the tip but can be seen with a jeweler’s loupe. This one-of-a-kind piece was custom made and is unlike any other figural vinaigrette I have ever seen. Vinaigrettes were also called scent boxes, as they typically held a sponge that was saturated with perfume. The cities in the 1700's and 1800's had open sewers; and Ladies and Gentlemen would carry a scent box to inhale and block out the stench of open sewers in the cities. However, this French piece, as most French made pieces, is unmarked; but the silver was tested as sterling. This is a small piece; about 6 1/2” long x 1 1/2" wide x 1” thick, weighing 2.1 ounces or 61 grams. The top silver hilt is made in several parts. The oval silver crossguard is silver soldered to a flared skirt, with a repetitive decorative pattern of silver half circles with end finials. This lower skirt is secured to an upper flared skirt that meets about halfway up the handle and is silver soldered to the upper part of the handle and embellished with a silver beaded collar and a stylized French Fluer de lis` silver border decoration above and below. The top of the handle flares to a tight-fitting hinged top that has a top knot with a collar of the same silver decorated as the crossguard, with an end ferrule. The top has a hidden 3 prong hinge that opens the top, works fine, and has a stop for the top in the open position. Inside the hollow handle is a compartment that is gold gilded, with traces remaining and in untouched condition with old silver polish remnants and is slightly faded due to the chemicals in the perfume over time. The original sponge for the inside vinaigrette is intact, albeit slightly delicate, and would have been soaked with a perfume or scented oils and used as a scent box. The top rim of the opening as 2 small cut outs, and one has a very slight thin outward lip that secures the top to the base with a pronounced click. There is no inside grill, and this piece was not made with one. There are no dings, dints, dents or damage to the silver. This is a most curious piece, imported from a French Dealer who did not know the purpose of this piece. Although it is a vinaigrette, it is too large to carry for most men to carry in their pocket or women in their purse, has no loop for a chatelaine, and appears to be a decorative piece and perhaps used in fraternal, ceremonial, or societal meetings; and the stylized dagger pattern may have some relevance to the French Satanism Revival in the late 1800’s.
PAYMENT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PAYPAL & ELECTRONIC FUNDS TRANSFER, e-CHECKS & ALL MAJOR CREDIT & DEBIT CARDS, APPLE PAY, GOOGLE PAY AND ALL OTHER PAYMENT METHODS APROVED BUY EBAY.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SHIPPING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FREE SHIPPING & HANDLING FOR DOMESTIC BUYERS & TO THE EBAY U.S.A.
